When I started my first big girl job, I kept a few essentials in my bag that have seriously saved my life. Starting a new job can be intimidating, but being prepared helps you have the confidence to take on whatever insanely long email thread comes your way.

Throw these items into a pouch to keep in the car, or straight into your work bag.

#1 Beauty Touch-Ups

Designating a work bag lip gloss and hair brush has saved me countless times. Often, I tend to have events later in the day, so freshening up is a must. Mini concealer or powder can also come in handy, just be careful around light colored work clothes!

#2 Lint roller.

Have a pet at home? Great- they should stay at home! Grab a travel-sized lint roller to throw in your bag to save your outfits from pet hair. It’s super easy to pull out in the car or bathroom before facing the day!

#3 Floss.

I know you’re like- girl what? But TRUST! Do not go out to the work lunch and then hop on your next Zoom with spinach in your teeth. Throw a bag of flosspicks in your bag or in the car. Can’t even tell you how many times I’ve been so relieved I remembered these!

#4 Feminine Products

There is nothing worse than an unexpected period visit. Always keep pads, tampons, or anything else you may need on hand!

#5 A snack.

We have 9-5s, 10-6s, whatever it may be now- you need to keep up your energy. Throw a granola bar or something salty in your bag to fuel up during an afternoon slump.

#6 Gum or mints.

Always always always, always. Keeping gum or mints on you will help you feel confident after eating or having a coffee. You never know when you may meet someone new, or suddenly a top-level executive decides to pop in- do not let them smell your morning caramel macchiato.

#7 Claw Clip + Hair ties

Trust- never have a bad hair day! Throw it in a quick bun if you need to look professional fast and the heatless curls just did not hit this time.

#8 Chargers

Always having your phone or laptop charger on you will be a lifesaver for long days.

Before embarking on your next job, take some time beforehand to ask yourself- what do I need to make me feel like my best self? Like Taylor Swift says- “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
