Mimi Moritz and Kylie Rubin, the creative duo behind Kymi and rising names within the fashion scene took the time to speak with me about everything from building a brand to MUUZes, creative collaboration, and what it means to shape a new generation of fashion-minded young women.

During our conversation, Moritz and Rubin described the creative process and inspiration behind Kymi, emphasizing their lifelong passion for fashion and self-expression.

Rubin explained that growing up attending a private school with a uniform policy limited her ability to express her personal style fully.

Moritz shared that she and Rubin originally planned to launch a charm business before transitioning into fashion design. After sketching ideas and refining their vision, the pair began working with a company that helped bring Kymi to life.

Both Moritz and Rubin said much of their inspiration came from their mothers, who introduced them to fashion at a young age and encouraged their creativity. “They gave us our inspiration and love for fashion,” they explained.

The duo described the brand’s aesthetic as heavily inspired by the early 2000s, with an emphasis on nostalgia and individuality. “We wanted to make a product we love for the people we love,” Rubin said.

Moritz and Rubin also shared that they and their friends wore Kymi pieces during Coachella, as they prepared for the brand’s anticipated launch in mid-June.

When discussing the challenges of starting a business, the pair explained that one of the hardest parts was navigating setbacks and creative dead ends, particularly during the early stages of their original charm business concept. Despite those obstacles, they emphasized the importance of pushing past limitations and continuing to evolve creatively.

“Our main goal is to put something special out,” Rubin said.

When it comes to MUUZes, the duo emphasized that, “other than our moms, we are inspired by Devon Lee Carlson, Garbriette, and also inspired by the Audrey Hepburns of the world, like Marilyn Monroe, the more vintage stars. Also, we love Addison Rae; we are big fans,” Mortiz said.

Mortiz and Rubin said they would love to see other best-friend pairs representing the brand, since it was created by two best friends themselves. They pointed to Kylie Jenner and Stassie Karanikolaou as examples of the kind of friendship and energy they envision embodying the brand.

Offering advice for young women hoping to start something of their own, Kylie Rubin said she learned from her father to “just do it, just go for it.” Mimi Moritz added that consistency is key and that “where there’s a will, there’s a way,” emphasizing that passion should always be the driving force behind motivation and success.

As Kymi prepares for its official launch, Mimi Moritz and Kylie Rubin are proving that friendship, creativity, and passion can be transformed into something larger than themselves. Through their nostalgic designs and shared vision, the duo hopes to create more than just a clothing brand, but a community that encourages individuality, confidence, and self-expression for a new generation of young women everywhere.
