Muuz is more than your classic online blog. Muuz is an inspirational brand born from two best friends who grew up learning how to navigate the fashion and beauty space in the ever-evolving digital age. It’s meant to cut through the noise of “the latest trend you HAVE to have” and give you real, no-B.S. advice.

I sat down with Muuz co-founder and digital and social media expert Mia Meltzer to discuss her journey with Muuz, deciding to pursue a career in marketing, and her advice to young women in the field.

The Growth of Digital Media

As she began at Indiana University in 2019, Mia pointed out that social media was in a growth stage. TikTok had barely even begun gaining popularity. As she reached sophomore year, her TikToks began blowing up, and she declared a public relations major.

“When I declared myself a media major, half of this world didn’t exist. The idea of a career in social media marketing wasn’t even really a thing, and so much has evolved over the last six years since I declared that major,” Mia explained.

She began to enjoy creating content in the fashion and beauty space and explored these topics in copywriting Amazon affiliate articles for Hyphen-Social.

While keeping up with the latest trends and connecting audiences with essential products, Mia wanted to keep creating. When discussing what young women would want from internet articles, she said, “You want real advice from people who are actually experiencing what you are going through in real time. Some people contributing articles, about, say, prom dresses, haven’t been to prom in 25 years!”

From then on, she connected with her best friend and fellow creator Ellie Zeiler, and Muuz was born.

Muuz’s Mission

Mia described Muuz’s mission as creating content “for young women by young women.”

It can feel difficult to relate to an influencer with 20 million followers who’s Trippin’ with Tarte every weekend. But a university student packing for the same trip as you? Or the young adult who just went through a friendship breakup? Those are relatable people with tangible advice on situations we all encounter.

“When hiring interns for Muuz, Ellie and I look for a character trait or value in our candidates that we also share,” Mia shared about curating the Muuz team for diversity and relatability.

Muuz has writers from several different countries and works on finding what unites women everywhere and sharing that with our Gen-Z audience.

Advice for the Girls

If you are interested in pursuing a career in media, whether that be social media management, marketing, advertising, public relations, or so much more, Mia has advice for you. Deciding what to study and how to navigate the postgraduate world can be intimidating. The most important thing to remember during this time in your young adult life is that you are not alone!

“Go full out and be 100% you,” Mia said about how to start posting your own content. And although people may make comments (they’re probably jealous you have the confidence), “be authentic, and most importantly, surround yourself with people who have similar goals as you.”

Maintaining a support system is imperative in pursuing any career dream. If you stay close to people who are driven and passionate, you can maintain those traits through your own journey. You should also find creators that inspire you. “I know that I’m not being fooled when I feel like I’m on FaceTime,” Mia said in reference to some of her favorite content creators.

The best thing about the age of media is that there is room for everyone. You could create content for a brand and be behind the scenes or step in front of the camera and create your own TikTok page. Whatever you choose, take the time to realize what makes you, you, and maintain that authenticity throughout personal and professional endeavors.

A Note from the CEO

"Mia has been the ultimate mentor, big sister, and blueprint. She passed down the crown with so much love, and it’s an honour to carry her vision forward as CEO. MUUZ wouldn’t be MUUZ without her." Sophia Wheway, CEO at MUUZ .
