Starting your study abroad can be scary, but here's a guide to help you with a smooth transition. I started my study abroad at Northeastern London my freshman year second semester. Even with the overthinking and scared sessions, it has been the most incredible experience of my life. I am able to learn about new cultures, make friends who live in London, travel the world, create my own sense of style and gain independence.
Here’s what you need to know:
London Fashion 101

Coming from a place where I could practically live in a hoodie and sweatpants, London's fashion scene was a total shift. Here activewear or sweatpants were rarely spotted unless you were heading to the gym.
Londoners have this effortless yet put-together style. Layering is everything, especially in the
winter. A stylish trench coat is a must—bonus points if it’s in a neutral color! I have a beige one and it instantly elevates any outfit. Now that the weather has been getting much warmer, I headed to Brick Lane to find a vintage leather jacket. I scored the perfect one to add to my wardrobe. There's nothing like London’s thrifting scene for discovering one-of-a-kind pieces and Brick Lane is a big favorite.
You most definitely need a good-quality pair of jeans, and a pair of knee-high boots for your
night outs. A secure crossbody bag is a must—pickpocketing happens in crowded areas like Oxford Street and the Tube. For class, though, I’m obsessed with my tote bag (amazon has a bunch). It fits everything while still looking effortlessly chic.
Going Out Culture
If you’re used to the American college party scene, get ready for a major shift in London’s social culture. The biggest difference would be how the legal age in London is 18. The pub culture is huge. They are social hubs where people meet after work, after class, or even for a quick study break. And yes, ordering a pint in the middle of the afternoon while studying for an upcoming midterm? Totally normal.
Now moving on to nightlife. London has so much to offer from high-end clubs with strict dress codes to student nights where entry is practically free or discounting. But here’s the biggest shocker: in London, the hottest student night isn’t the weekend—it’s Tuesday! By midweek, clubs are packed, and the real night doesn’t even start until midnight or later. I was definitely not prepared for how late people go out here—you’ll be getting home when the sun is coming up.
Independence: Living & Getting Around
London has made me more independent than ever—in the best way possible. I went from never having left my house for more than a few months to living alone in a foreign city. Navigating a city this big seemed intimidating at first, but I quickly fell in love with it. Thankfully, my university provided me with an Oyster Card, which has been an absolute lifesaver. The Tube and buses make getting around so easy (once you figure out the lines and avoid rush hour madness).
Beyond just getting from place to place, I’ve embraced solo dates which is something I never thought I’d enjoy this much. I’ve started taking myself on solo dates, going for long walks while listening to my favorite podcasts, and even trying out fun workout classes (Pilates then walk around Notting Hill? Yes, please!). There's something so freeing about exploring the city on my own terms, and honestly, I’m loving every minute of it.
Travel: Weekend Getaways & Exploring Europe

One of the absolute best parts of studying in London is how ridiculously easy it is to travel! So far, I’ve hopped over to Stockholm, Budapest, and Morocco, and I’m already counting down the days until my trips to Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Madrid. Living in London means weekend trips around Europe are accessible almost every weekend.
Budget airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet are a lifesaver, I’ve been able to snag roundtrip flights
to Paris, Rome, and Barcelona for under £50. The trick is to travel light. I got myself a travel
backpack, and honestly, it’s the best thing ever. The only downside is having to wear jeans to the airport. But honestly, that’s an easy sacrifice when you remember you’re literally about to land in Rome!
Additionally, a quick train ride can take you all around the UK to places like Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton, or Bath for a change of scenery. And always take advantage of student discounts, they are honestly everywhere. From workout classes to museums to food, flashing your student ID can save you a ton.
Tips for an Unforgettable Study Abroad Experience
Say yes to new experiences! Whether it’s a trip to Morocco, a day at the British Museum, or a night out with people you don't know. Being spontaneous and getting out of my comfort zone has made for one of the best nights of my life and meeting my closest friends.
