Defying Gravity: Top 5 Looks from the WICKED Method Dressing

By: Lauren Napierkowski

In a world where witches and pop stars collide, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are redefining method dressing during the Wicked press tour. As they grace the red carpet, their looks go beyond mere fashion; they embody the very essence of their characters, Elphaba and Glinda. This holiday season, they are not just setting trends but also infusing every appearance with a touch of Oz.

Who would’ve thought this whole fashion extravaganza would begin with the sequined jerseys the co-stars teased during Super Bowl LVIII? It’s seems Wicked is taking a few notes from Margot Robbie’s method dressing for the Barbie tour  - except this time, we’re treated to twice the looks! Let’s explore their top five outfits, showcasing a spectacular blend of character-driven fashion.

The Met Gala

At the Met Gala earlier this year, themed “Garden of Time,” Grande dazzled in a white mother-of-pearl gown designed by creative director Jonathon Anderson. The gown caught the light beautifully, radiating soft pastels and pink hues that were definitely Glinda-approved. Erivo drew inspiration from Grande’s pink palette, donning a black silk faille tailored jacket and skirt with lace-up details by Loewe and Thom Browne. Her look was head to toe with black sequins, pink silk petals, and green beaded insects, creating a striking fantasy.

Sydney, Australia

Currently in Sydney for the press tour, Grande arrived in a voluminous pink gown that perfectly embodied her interpretation of Glinda. The dress featured a fitted bodice with puff sleeves and a full tulle skirt, enhanced by sheer fabric detailing that sparkled with every movement. For finishing touches, she accessorized with a diamond butterfly choker and ring from Lorraine Schwartz, and her sleek ponytail showcased a charming face-framing curl.

Erivo opted for a strapless black gown with a more structured floor-length skirt that strayed away from her usual Elphaba green. This tailored piece projected a powerful yet sophisticated vibe. She mirrored Grande’s accessories with her own choker, a striking balance of black and white that elegantly represented the character’s duality.

Wall Street Journal Innovator Awards

Just when you thought they couldn’t coordinating their looks any further, they just keep doing it! The duo arrived to the Wall Street Journal’s Innovator Awards at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Grande attended the event in a white floral-embroidered gown from Vivienne Westwood, while Erivo turned heads in a chic gray and green look from the Erdem Spring 2025 Ready to Wear collection.

Academy Museum Appearance

On October 19, 2024, Grande and Erivo stepped out at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Grande debuted an Audrey-Hepburn-inspired gown - a custom Balmain piece from the 1963 archives. With a fitted black waistband and a full skirt adorned with black and white polka dots, she embodied timeless elegance with some retro flair. Erivo stunned in a custom beaded green strapless gown by Louis Vuitton, cinched at the waist with a full skirt that stayed loyal to the glamour of Elphaba.

Olympics Opening Ceremony 2024

Before the holiday season even kicked off, the pair teased what was to come in a contrasting pastel pink and emerald green ensemble. Grande wore a baby pink look by Thom Browne, featuring a drop waist midi-style dress paired with matching cream silk gloves and pink pointed-toe heels. She completed her look with a simple bow in her updo. Erivo’s gown mirrored this style with a strapless emerald green design, flexing a wide skirt and sweetheart neckline. She accessorized with a wide-brimmed hat, long green nails, and pointed-toe heels, nodding to her character’s flair.

Fashion Meets Character

As Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo continue their Wicked press tour, their method dressing is a testament to the powerful connection between character and style. Each outfit not only reflects their roles, but also serves as a reminder of the magic that fashion can create. So whether you identify as a princess like Galinda, or embody the strength of Elphaba, remember that true style comes from embracing who you are. Ariana and Cynthia prove, true style isn’t just about what you wear - it’s about wearing your character with confidence, and there’s no greater magic than that.
