Let’s be real, keeping up with trends today it’s exhausting and, quite frankly, impossible. Every week, there’s something new. How can anyone keep up?
I don’t know about you, but there came a point where I couldn’t handle the constant pressure. It wasn’t just my wallet that was suffering, it was my mental health, too. Society makes it feel like if we’re not wearing the latest trends, we’re somehow out of the loop or not stylish enough. And since most of us can’t afford to buy many expensive clothes that match every new trend, we end up buying cheap clothes that don’t last and go out of style just as fast.
So, what’s the solution?
Building a wardrobe that’s timeless and totally you. Now, I know the whole
"timeless wardrobe" thing isn’t exactly new, but hear me out, I’ve got a fresh take on it, and it’s all about keeping it sustainable and affordable. Plus, your style doesn’t have to stay the same forever; it evolves just like you do. So, how do you build a wardrobe that works for you, without dropping serious cash every season?
Here’s the trick: I do a full closet switch-up twice a year, once for fall/winter and once for
spring/summer. And let me tell you, that’s when the magic (and, let’s be honest, chaos)
happens.
The Closet Revamp
Research your style
Start with a major Pinterest deep search. This is where you canfigure out which style is calling your name. Create a mood board dedicated to looks that resonate with you. The goal here is to find styles that you actually want to wear, not just stuff that’s trending on your Instagram feed.
Make a List, Check It Twice
Once you have a good feel for what you like, make a list of the pieces that are key to pulling off that style. Think of this like a checklist for your wardrobe essentials.
Closet Clean Out, The Good, the Bad, and the Forgotten
This is where the real fun begins. Go through your closet and start sorting. I guarantee you’ll
find pieces you forgot you had, and who knows, they might just become your new favorites. (Pro tip: Check your parents’ closets too. Seriously, so many current trends are just throwbacks from when they were your age. You’ll probably find some vintage gems that feel both unique and meaningful.)
Revise and Reassess
After your cleanout, revisit the list you made. Cross off any pieces you already own and
highlight the gaps you need to fill. It’s like shopping but with way less guilt.
Shop Smart, Not Fast
Now that you know what you need, it’s time to start shopping. But don’t just run out and grab a bunch of fast fashion. Start slow with a few basic, high-quality pieces that you can mix and match. I’m all about going to thrift stores for this, because it’s way more sustainable, and you can find some seriously unique pieces that no one else will have. Building a killer wardrobe takes time, so don’t rush it. The idea is to create a collection that feels like you, not just a reflection of fleeting trends.
The Silver Lining of Trend Overload
There’s actually something positive to take away from the rapid pace of trends today: it gives you a chance to explore your style. With so many different looks out there, you’re bound to find the one that resonates most with who you are. And when you do, it’ll be so much more meaningful than simply following the crowd.
So, take your time. Build your wardrobe thoughtfully. And remember: it’s not about wearing
what’s in, it’s about wearing what feels like you.
