Lately, I have been seeing a lot of people glorifying New York. As one of the most popular cities in the world, the name has a lot to live up to. The nightlife, people, and culture all contribute to making it the place it is. But is it really worthy of the hype?
Let’s start with some of the hard truths about the city.
1. It's Very Fast-Paced
Not only do people walk quickly in New York, but the hustle is non-stop. Everyone wants immediate results. It seems like everyone has something to do and only a short amount of time to do it. My friend and I were talking about how there is an intense grind culture in New York. She told me how everyone wants to be super successful and it can really cause you to burnout.
2. It Can Get Really Expensive
NYC is one of the most expensive cities in the world. With rent, high taxes, and living expenses, it can be a lot, especially when you’re young. Whenever I am in the city, I spend close to $10 on a small latte. For someone who is as addicted to caffeine as I am, those expenses can easily add up (pro tip: learn to make coffee at home). If you add the costs of going out, groceries, gym memberships, and more, it can be really hard to sustain yourself.
3. The Feeling Of Being Lonely But You Aren't Alone
This one is kind of contradicting because New York is such a crowded city. It can be really difficult to make friends when starting out in NYC. Also, FOMO can be one of the hardest things to deal with. When you're busy doing work, it can be hard to decide whether or not to go out.
Looking past these few challenges, here are just some of the best parts about the Big Apple.
1. The People Of New York
I know New Yorkers have a bad reputation for being cold and rude. I think it’s mostly because they just mind their own business and stay out of people's way. Deep down, people are friendly and helpful when needed. You also will find the most amazing group of people all with a unique background. To sum it up, it’s all tough love and once you get past that you’ll know mean New Yorkers are just a stereotype.
2. It's The Culture Capital Of The world
The endless number of museums, different restaurants, and cute cafes add to the experience of being in such a diverse city. I love going on walks and listening to music as I people-watch. Literally no two people are alike and that’s what makes the city so special. Going to the MET, strolling in Central Park, or even shopping around SoHo all guarantee a memorable time.
3. There’s Something For Everyone In NYC
No matter who you are or what you want to do in life, there’s a place for you. It’s kind of crazy that a city with so many unique people is still something that all those people have in common. Everyone has a job, hobby, or interest, and chances are that there’s someone who shares that same trait as you.
While it may be tough at first, you will make some of the best memories and friends while living in New York. Once you get past the fact that it isn’t like what you see on social media or Gossip Girl, it is truly unlike any other city in the world, where you can be whoever you choose to be.
