Thursday nights at 9 PM will never be the same. After an epic finale,
‘Severance’ season 2 has come to an end, leaving viewers with a few answers, and twice as many questions. If you are looking for movies and shows to fill that sci-fi void, here are some fascinating recommendations.
Movies
The Truman Show
Where to watch: Hulu
The Truman Show tells the story of Truman Burbank who has become America’s most
beloved man on television- yet he has no idea of his audience or the world outside of his
quaint beach town. Personally my all time favorite movie, I cannot recommend this
aesthetic, somewhat 1984-esque tale of self discovery enough.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Where to watch: Apple TV or Amazon Prime Video
After you watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, you’ll be left wondering if that is
perhaps the inspiration for Severance. In this movie, lovers Joe and Clementine undergo a
procedure to forget each other. They explore the aftermath and ethics of the change as
they live complicated new lives.
Stranger than Fiction
Where to watch: Tubi or Amazon Prime Video
Will Ferrell plays an average man, who quickly finds himself in a strange predicament as
he hears a woman’s voice narrating his thoughts. He goes on a hunt to figure out who is
behind this, and if she will decide his fate.
Ready Player One
Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV
In this futuristic movie, a young man joins a universe where he can create his avatar to be
anyone he wants. The fellow avatars race against each other to secure a fortune left
behind by the digital world’s creator.
Shows
The 100
Where to watch: Netflix
After the planet is destroyed, a group of survivors that fled to outer space send 100
teenagers down to Earth to see what is left. The show follows their many trials and
tribulations as they navigate survivors and an intense landscape.
Silo
Where to watch: Apple TV
This show follows an underground society and their hunt to find the truth about the seemingly destroyed outside world. They face uprisings and protests as citizens grow restless in the silo.
Paradise
Where to watch: Hulu
In this thrilling show, the audience follows a top security advisor of the president, Xavier,
into a secret society built for when the world ends. But, when the president meets a
mysterious death, it is up to Xavier to solve the mystery of what happened to him and the
outside world.
The Society
Where to watch: Netflix
This show follows a group of teens who return to their town from a school trip to find it
empty. They have to restart their own society while trying to decode what happened to
their home. The ending will have your jaw on the floor, but beware- it was cancelled after
one season, so you’re left theorizing!
I hope these movies and shows will give you new theories to ponder and new forbidden
romances to swoon over. But if you’re feeling burnt out from futuristic fantasies, try listening to a podcast or touching grass to reconnect with media that isn’t full of severance memes.
